7 held for attack on scribes in Ahmedabad
21 Jul 2008, 2025 hrs IST,PTI

AHMEDABAD: Seven supporters of the religious guru Asaram were arrested by police in the case of attack on mediapersons, even as the leader's ashram termed the incident as 'unfortunate'.

The accused were identified after their photographs appeared in different vernacular newspapers and were arrested on Sunday, police said.

They also said that more people have been identified in the case and investigation is on in the case.

A number of journalists were bashed up and their equipments were smashed by supporters of Asaram Bapu on July 18, during the bandh call given over the mysterious deaths of two boys who were students of the resident gurukul of the religious guru.

Supporters of the Asaram Bapu came with sticks and iron pipes and thrashed a group of journalists who were outside the ashram covering the bandh call. They even damaged their outdoor broadcasting vans.

Meanwhile, the ashram authorities in a statement issued said that the attack on journalists was 'unfortunate'.

"We had information that some people were burning vehicles of our guests outside the ashram and attacking followers who were coming to attend the 'Gurupurnima' function at the ashram premises," spokesperson of the ashram Uday Sanghani said.

"The ashram inmates then acted in self-defense. It is unfortunate that the journalists were caught in the cross fire and had to bear the brunt," Sanghani added.

You're sitting at work, preparing notes for the morning meeting, when you gradually begin to notice white, jagged lights flickering at the edge of your vision. The left side of your face goes numb, and so do your hands. Your head suddenly seems swollen to three times its size. You know that you're about to get yet another migraine. Hours later, your meeting is going on without you, and you are in the bathroom battling skull-crushing pain and nausea, and you're unable to see out of one eye. It feels as though someone's taken one of those cartoon sledgehammers to your head, except not nearly as funny. The next day, a co-worker makes fun of you for missing work because of a headache.

Nick Rowe/Getty Images
Hormone changes may be one reason that women experience migraine pain more frequently than men.

Migraines are debilitating conditions that affect the lives of between 12 and 24 million Americans (18 percent of women and 6 percent of men), and remain grossly underdiagnosed. They are anything but your normal tension or sinus headaches, lasting anywhere from several hours to several days and in some reported cases, months or even years. Migraines are often accompanied by symptoms such as loss of vision, vomiting, tremors and stroke-like symptoms such as numbness to parts of the body. Migraine headache pain usually focuses on one side of the skull, though for some it can happen on both. Many people say that their migraines switch sides of the head.

Amazingly, doctors are still not entirely sure exactly how someone gets a migraine or why certain things set them off (or trigger them). Previously, they believed that it was caused by blood vessels dilating. While this could be a contributor to pain and the cause of an aura (lines, colors, zigzag patterns or blind spots visible prior to migraine pain), doctors no longer believe this to be the underlying problem. Newer evidence suggests that other factors, such as the release of chemicals and increased sensitivity to pain, occur at the same time, which is the actual cause of most migraine pain. Most recently, doctors have classified migraine as a neurobiological condition, or one that originates in the brain.

Etymology

The word "migraine" comes from a combination of the words "hemicrania" (meaning "half the head", where many migraines take place), and "megrim," which, back in the 18th century, meant a low feeling on a whim -- something delicate women of the time would get. Alexander Pope personified the megrim in "The Rape of the Lock," making it a sullen hand-maiden to the Queen of the Vapors in the underworld (Canto IV).

DATA SHOWS MARS' WET AND BALMY PAST

Data shows Mars' wet and balmy past
17 Jul 2008, 1131 hrs IST,PTI

NEW YORK: Mars once hosted vast lakes, flowing rivers and a variety of other wet environment that had potential to support life, researchers say.

The conclusions are based on two studies conducted on data of American space agency's Mars Reconnaissance orbiter.

One study, published in the July 17 issue of Nature, shows that vast regions of the ancient highlands of Mars, which cover about half the planet, contain clay minerals, which can form only in the presence of water.

Volcanic lavas buried the clay-rich regions during subsequent, drier periods of the planet's history, but impact craters later exposed them at thousands of locations across Mars, it showed.

The data for the study derives from images taken by the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars, or CRISM, and other instruments on the orbiter.

"The big surprise from these new results is how pervasive and long-lasting Mars' water was, and how diverse the wet environments were," said Scott Murchie, CRISM principal investigator at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory.

The clay-like minerals, called phyllosilicates, preserve a record of the interaction of water with rocks dating back to what is called the Noachian period of Mars' history, approximately 4.6 billion to 3.8 billion years ago, researchers say.

This period corresponds to the earliest years of the solar system, when Earth, the moon and Mars sustained a cosmic bombardment by comets and asteroids. Rocks of this age have largely been destroyed on Earth by plate tectonics.

They are preserved on the moon, but were never exposed to liquid water. The phyllosilicate-containing rocks on Mars preserve a unique record of liquid water environments possibly suitable for life in the early solar system.

AIRLINES DUMP TRAVEL AGENTS

Now, airlines dump travel agents
17 Jul 2008, 0355 hrs IST, Shoeb Khan,

JAIPUR: Air travel blues continue to puzzle the passengers. The latest in the row is the decision of airlines not to give commission to travel agents for air tickets. Ultimately, the buck will be passed on to the passengers, who will end up paying additional amount for their air ticket.

Said Sunil Goyal, Manager, Ankit Travels: "We received circulars from all the major airlines explaining the need to curtail commission on tickets. It's very discouraging for our business, which was badly affected by the rising prices of air tickets and with the withdrawal of two low-cost airlines from Sanganer airport recently," said Goyal.

This no-commission plan will be applicable on both domestic and international airlines. This will likely to be-come effective from next October.

Meanwhile, the incomes of travel agents have gone down by almost 30% in the last two months. Finally, they decided to pass the buck to the passengers to remain in the market. "We have decided to introduce a service fee on every ticket. The service fee will depend on the distance covered," said Rajesh Jain, manager, Ashoka Holiday Pvt Limited.

According to norms by IATA, every airline is under obligation to give 5% of its basic fare to the agents in lieu of their service. During the peak season, several airlines give additional benefit to these agents if they achieve the set target.

The rising prices have already affected the movement of passengers at the airport and now the additional burden of service charge on the passengers will push out the small players from the market.

The worst affected will be low-cost airlines, which are struggling to stand on their feet after the sudden rise in the fuel surcharge. Two low-cost airlines have already shut down their operation from Sanganer airport, leaving hundreds of passengers in a dismal state who have booked their tickets in advance.

The passengers who have already shifted their focus to cheaper means of travel will continue to stay away from flying. "I usually travel to Mumbai twice in a month; the rising price of airfare has forced me to opt for Gharib Rath which is more cost-effective. However, if travel agents are going to charge additional money apart from the fare, I will surely bid goodbye to air travel," said Ankit Goyal, a frequent traveller.

On the other hand, an official of a premier airline said on condition of anonymity: "This step has been taken to re-duce the cost of operations so that fares remain stable for the passengers in this odd situation."

It was learnt that a few aireline agents have already expressed their unhappiness over the waiver of the commission. Aggrieved over the decision, agents hade in Maharashtra recently did a Gandhigiri by sending samosas to office of an airline company

165 LICENSES

165 licenses
Filed under: Business — Arjun Swarup @ 5:31 pm

The Four Seasons launches in Mumbai.

This bit is stunning -

Bureaucracy and a shortage of skilled workers make building hotels difficult - the opening of the Four Seasons was delayed by at least two years. The hotel needed 165 government permits - including a special licence for the vegetable weighing scale in the kitchen and one for each of the bathroom scales put in guest rooms. In the end, the hotel cost $100m (euro 64.5m, pound 51m), or about $500,000 per room, and prices - which start at $500 per night rising to more than $1,000 - reflect that

ECONOMIC ILLITERACY

Economic Illiteracy
Filed under: Basic Questions, Education, Human Capital, Media & Economics — Prashant @ 7:06 am

Mukul Asher, a professor at the LKY School of Public Policy in Singapore and Amarendu Nandy, a research scholar at the same university, have a thought-provoking guest post:

A recent ASSOCHAM Business Barometer Survey of 258 faculty members of MBA programs in India found that most professors did not know basic facts about the national and global economy.

“89 per cent of the teachers were unable to tell the GDP growth rate scaled by the Indian economy in the financial year 2006-07.

The survey further divulged that hardly 6 per cent of the lecturers surveyed read any business newspaper on regular basis. Moreover, persistent readers of business magazines were negligible”.

The appalling ignorance of these faculty members is symptomatic of an endemic financial and economic illiteracy among wide sections of Indian society, including intellectuals, media, politicians, policymakers, and the bureaucracy.

India’s economic illiteracy explains the pedestrian quality of most discussions about the economy — they rarely reflect an appropriate mental picture of India’s economic structure, its sources of growth and competitiveness, its vulnerabilities and challenges.

As we explain at more length in our Pragati essay, in terms of immediate public policy priorities, incorporation of economics in the education curricula is essential for multiple reasons – to increase the employability of graduates, to help manage social change better, to ensure more effective design and delivery of public services, to obtain a better ROI from budgetary outlays and ensure better governance.

Speaking of governance, for instance: policymakers are not sufficiently held accountable for their poor decisions which display a shameful and at times, willful, ignorance of basic economic principles. A prime example (just one of many) is the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, which ignores the vital concepts of opportunity cost and moral hazard, and is not based on robust empirical evidence.

India’s hopes of moving into the 21st century and its dreams of reaping the so-called demographic dividend are unlikely to fructify unless the education establishment at the Centre and the States rethink the curricula and its priorities.

Questions:

1) Do you agree with Asher & Nandy? If so, how does that square with Ramesh Venkataraman’s view that “today’s electorate is starting to view government less as a mai-baap granting entitlements — seats in colleges, jobs in the public sector, subsidies — and more as an enabler of opportunities.”

2) At first blush, I would have assumed that an economically literate populace was a prerequisite for sound economic policy decisions. However, is that really true of the other developing countries, especially the Asian tigers? Can someone with first-hand experience of those countries comment? And, if they’re as bad as (or not much better than) India in terms of economic illiteracy (as I suspect), what explains their economic decision-making? The East Asian countries’ economic policies may be far from ideal, but I find it hard to believe that they’ve managed to come so far and so quickly on the basis of worthless economic policies.

The 1976 film "Network" is famous for the line "I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!" The fictional news anchor who utters the line becomes a celebrity, with the movie tracking how his angry diatribes result in high ratings. We still love to watch people get angry, from John McEnroe slamming down his tennis racket during a match to political candidates who utter expletives when they don't know the microphone is still on.

Timothy A. Clary/AFP/Getty Images
Some watch hockey just for the angry fights.

We can tune into anger on every channel, from trash-talking wrestlers to venting stand-up comedians. We check out the chair throwing on "The Jerry Springer Show," and when we can't get enough from television, we'll turn to YouTube to see clips of celebrities acting out against the paparazzi.

While we may help these displays of anger to garner ratings and sell tabloids, we're much more hesitant to look at anger in our own lives. Anger is an emotion that encompasses everything from mild irritation to intense rage. We may think of anger as a negative emotion, one that gets us all worked up and causes us to say things we don't mean. Sure, we're annoyed, but hasn't everyone been told, "Don't get bent out of shape?" This seems to imply that anger is an unnatural distortion of who you are.

That's not true, though. Anger is a natural emotion that alerts us when something has violated the natural order of how we think things should go. This natural order may be societal; for example, when a shopper has 20 items in a 10-items-or-fewer line, this may make us angry because it's a violation of a clearly defined rule. But it can also show us that things are not happening the way that we as individuals expect them to go.

The bodily effects of anger are meant to motivate us to take charge and restore the balance of right and wrong. But for this to occur, you have to get angry for the right reason and express your anger appropriately. As the images on our TV screens and monitors show us, this is a fine line to walk.

So how do we decide what triggers are justified? And then what happens -- does your blood really boil? What's the best way to let someone know you're angry that doesn't result in a bill for physical damage? On the next page, we'll take a look at what makes us angry.

Thanks to the media, the word "hacker" has gotten a bad reputation. The word summons up thoughts of malicious computer users finding new ways to harass people, defraud corporations, steal information and maybe even destroy the economy or start a war by infiltrating military computer systems. While there's no denying that there are hackers out there with bad intentions, they make up only a small percentage of the hacker community.

The term computer hacker first showed up in the mid-1960s. A hacker was a programmer -- someone who hacked out computer code. Hackers were visionaries who could see new ways to use computers, creating programs that no one else could conceive. They were the pioneers of the computer industry, building everything from small applications to operating systems. In this sense, people like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak were all hackers -- they saw the potential of what computers could do and created ways to achieve that potential.

A unifying trait among these hackers was a strong sense of curiosity, sometimes bordering on obsession. These hackers prided themselves on not only their ability to create new programs, but also to learn how other programs and systems worked. When a program had a bug -- a section of bad code that prevented the program from working properly -- hackers would often create and distribute small sections of code called patches to fix the problem. Some managed to land a job that leveraged their skills, getting paid for what they'd happily do for free.

As computers evolved, computer engineers began to network individual machines together into a system. Soon, the term hacker had a new meaning -- a person using computers to explore a network to which he or she didn't belong. Usually hackers didn't have any malicious intent. They just wanted to know how computer networks worked and saw any barrier between them and that knowledge as a challenge.
Video Gallery: Hacking Biometric Passports
German hackers have hacked the European passport system and stolen biometric information. This video from Reuters shows how the network behind these passports works and how hackers have gotten inside it.

In fact, that's still the case today. While there are plenty of stories about malicious hackers sabotaging computer systems, infiltrating networks and spreading computer viruses, most hackers are just curious -- they want to know all the intricacies of the computer world. Some use their knowledge to help corporations and governments construct better security measures. Others might use their skills for more unethical endeavors.

In this article, we'll explore common techniques hackers use to infiltrate systems. We'll examine hacker culture and the various kinds of hackers as well as learn about famous hackers, some of whom have run afoul of the law.
Hackers and Crackers
Many computer programmers insist that the word "hacker" applies only to law-abiding enthusiasts who help create programs and applications or improve computer security. Anyone using his or her skills maliciously isn't a hacker at all, but a cracker.

Crackers infiltrate systems and cause mischief, or worse. Unfortunately, most people outside the hacker community use the word as a negative term because they don't understand the distinction between hackers and crackers.

shivaji's war

How Shivaji tackled Afzal Khan

The Battle of Pratapgad was fought between the Shivaji and Afzal Khan in November 1659. Despite having fewer forces, the Marathas got their first significant victory over a regional power and Shivaji became a larger than life person. Kedar says that when people sang about his heroics, they forgot about his strategies.

When Afzal khan entered Maharashtra, first he roamed around on Deccan plateau. He destroyed temples in an attempt to incite Shivaji. Shivaji did not escalate the matters. Khan committed atrocities. Shivaji chose not to respond. Khan attacked and conquered several forts. Shivaji kept quiet. Khan attacked Pune. Shivaji just sucked up that insult. If there is a man who has killed your brother in the past (Khan had killed Shivaji’s brother Shambhu raje) and who comes back and one by one destroys the things you love and revere, won’t you respond in revenge? You will right? That’s why you are not Shivaji.

TRAVEL INSURACE

Travel insurance is insurance that is intended to cover medical expenses, financial, and other losses incurred while traveling, either within one's own country, or internationally.

Travel insurance can usually be arranged at the time of booking of a trip to cover exactly the duration of that trip or a more extensive, continuous insurance can be purchased from (most often) travel insurance companies, travel agents or directly from travel suppliers such as cruiselines or tour operators.

Travel insurance often offers coverage for a variety of travelers. Student travel, business travel, leisure travel, adventure travel, cruise travel, and international travel are all various options that can be insured.

The most common risks that are covered by travel insurance are:
  • Medical expenses
  • Emergency evacuation/repatriation
  • Overseas funeral expenses
  • Accidental death, injury or disablement benefit
  • Cancellation
  • Curtailment
  • Delayed departure
  • Loss, theft or damage to personal possessions and money (including travel documents)
  • Delayed baggage (and emergency replacement of essential items)
  • Legal assistance
  • Personal liability and rental car damage excess

Some travel policies will also provide cover for additional costs, although these vary widely between providers.

And in addition, often separate insurance can be purchased for specific costs such as:
pre-existing medical conditions (e.g. asthma, diabetes)
high risk sports (e.g. skiing, scuba-diving)
travel to high risk countries (e.g. due to war or natural disasters or acts of terrorism)

Common Exclusions:
  • pre-existing medical conditions
  • war or terrorism - but some plans may cover this risk
  • pregnancy related expenses
  • injury or illness caused by alcohol or drug use

Travel insurance can also provide helpful services, often 24 hours a day, 7 days a week that can include concierge services and emergency travel assistance.

Typically travel insurance for the duration of a journey costs approximately 5-7% of the cost of the trip.
